Volunteer Stories

Wedding Bells:

wedding 1

The residents had the opportunity to take part in a mock wedding as Jill Saucier and Karter Larabee practiced their vows. The bride and junior bridesmaid were carrying baby roses with baby's breath and the girls were carrying ivory long stem roses. Thanks to a local business, Nita's Bridal Shop, who unselfishly volunteered all the work in preparing the girls and donating all the items, this event was a huge success. After the ceromony the cake was served to the residents by the bridesmaids and maid of honor. The event helped our residence reminisce of a time in their lives when they too celebrated their own weddings.

Talents Shared:

The Caribou Hoofers Square Dance Club is another volunteer group who entertained our residents. It is wonderful to have people from our communities who are willing to come in and share their talents. The residents sat and watched in amazement as the group performed several different square dancing routines.

Helicopter Ride:

South Paris Maine Veterans Home out on their annual Fryeburg fair trip, Murray "Mike" Thurston noticed that helicopter rides were available. He commented to one of our volunteers that he would like to take a ride in the helicopter. Pat Paar, activity supervisor, was informed of the request and looked into the feasibility of him making the trip. With the go ahead from family and the administrator, Mike was informed that he was going up in the helicopter. Mike's comment was " oh, that will be wonderful". Western Maine Veterans' Advisory Committee funded the outing to the fair ground in addition to making it possible for Mike to leave the fair with some extra special memories of a helicopter ride over Fryeburg. Mike was accompanied by John Kezal, MVH liaison & volunteer.
