Scarborough was the third of our six multi-service facilities. Opening in July of 1990, it is located in an urban setting on the outskirts of Portland. Inside the facility you will find 24 hour RN coverage in four separate nursing units: a 40 bed rehabilitation and skilled nursing care unit, a 40 bed long-term care unit, a 40 bed secured unit for residents with Alzheimer/Dementia and other related dementias and a 30 bed residential care unit designed to meet the needs of those in the early stages of dementia. The focus is on returning the resident to their home and community, whenever possible.
Maine Veterans' Home - Scarborough is a teaching facility. Under the supervision of the Scarborough Medical Director, Maine Veterans Homes in Scarborough is affiliated with schools of nursing and the Family Practice and Internal Medicine Residency Programs at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. This keeps Scarborough on the leading edge of gerontological nursing and geriatric medicine.

Coming from the North on Interstate 295: Take Scarborough/Old Orchard Beach exit. This will merge into US Route One. Continuing towards Scarborough, Maine Veterans' Home is located at 290 US Route One South on the left.
From South, via U.S. Rte 1: approximately 10 miles from Biddeford/Saco. Watch for the sign on your left for "Scarborough Downs Race Track." At the 3rd set of traffic lights from the Scarborough Downs sign, bear right to the Maine Veterans' Homes.
North or South via Maine Turnpike: Take Scarborough exit. Stay straight through first set of traffic lights (Haigis Parkway to Route 1 (1.4 miles). Turn left onto Route 1 North to 4th set of traffic lights (.8 mile), and bear right to the Maine Veterans' Homes.
Coming from the South on Interstate 295 through Portland: Take Exit 2, Scarborough/Old Orchard Beach to Route 1 (2.1 miles). At the 6th set of traffic lights (1.5 miles), turn left to the Maine Veterans' Home.
Coming from the West on Interstate 95 in Westbrook: Take Exit 8 to Exit 6, Scarborough. Toll booth, and then straight through first set of traffic lights (Haigis Parkway) to Route 1 (1.4 miles). Turn left onto Route 1 North to 4th set of traffic lights (.8 mile), and bear right to the Maine Veterans' Homes.
Coming from Gorham on Route 114: Take route 114 to Scarborough, Route 1. Right onto Route 1. Right onto Route 1 to the 2nd set of traffic lights (approximately .5 mile), turn left to the Maine Veterans' Homes.
