  • Maine Veterans’ Homes – Bangor
  • Maine Veterans’ Homes – Machias

The four Bronze awards received by MVH are part of only 461 facilities nationally that will receive the award, to be presented during AHCA/NCAL’s 61st Annual Convention and Exposition, Oct. 10-13, 2010 in Long Beach, CA.  There are currently over 16,000 nursing homes in the U.S.

"The commitment to quality designated by this award is a key first step to developing systematic, sustainable, person-centered care and services," stated Bruce Yarwood, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “We congratulate Maine Veterans’ Homes on this achievement.”

Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is based on the core values and criteria of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program. It provides a pathway for providers of long term and post-acute care services to journey towards performance excellence. Facilities begin their quality journey at the Bronze level where they are asked to develop an organizational profile including vision and mission statements, an awareness of their environment and customers’ expectations. Bronze applicants are also asked to demonstrate their ability to improve a process. At the Bronze level applications are reviewed by Examiners who have received special training to qualify as judges for the award program.

MVH resident and staff hold 16 foot long Burmese Python Derek Small (far right) holds the head of Medusa, a 16-feet-long Burmese Python while residents, staff and even family members hold the rest of the snake's unusually long body.  Derek is founder and director of the Granite State Zoo.

Derek Small from the Granite State Zoo and several wild animals from around the world provided a great show for residents, staff and some of their family members on July 1st.

“Wildlife Encounters” features presentations where the Zoo’s educators travel to inform and educate audiences on a wide variety of animals.  Derek is the founder and director of the zoo and he has been working with wildlife since 1993.

Some of the animals Derek presented were the Arctic Fox, African Serval (a wild cat), Green-winged Macaw, and the Burmese Python, Medusa, measuring 16 feet long.

Derek walked through the audience with many of the animals and allowed anyone daring enough to pet the intimidating python.  The hour-long presentation was a big hit, even for those who fear snakes.  Derek provided this experience at no charge, at the request of a resident—his grandfather.  Thank you, Derek and the Granite State Zoo!
