Special Donation in Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH - Devon Wilbanks, 9, stopped by Maine Veterans' Home - Scarborough Feb. 20 to present a check for $260.50 to the Home's Activities Department.

Devon, from Cumberland, presented the check to Steve Garde, Administrator, in front of a large crowd of residents and staff.

Devon raised the money to support veterans at MVH by holding bake sales and other fundraising events. His father, Jonathan Andreasen, is President of the Men's Auxiliary of the VFW Post 6859 in Portland and Devon's grandmother, Joy Andreasen, is President of the Ladies Auxiliary of that Post.
Following the check presentation, Devon received a certificate from MVH by Steve Garde. Devon also walked around the room shaking the hands of all the residents.

VFW Post 6859 Commander Mark Reilly was on hand to personally thank Devon for his efforts and commented on how dedicated this young man is to community service.

Devon's actions were well-received by all in attendance and many commented on his incredible initiative and drive to succeed at helping others.

AUGUSTA (May 1, 09): Staff at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta were recipients of Maine Alzheimer's Association's Top Statewide Business Fund-raising Team award for their efforts in the 2008 Memory Walk for collecting more than $10,000 for the association.

The Augusta team consisted of about 15 staff members in addition to many family and friends of residents at the home. This is the second consecutive year a team representing the Augusta veterans' home has received the award.

"I am very proud of the efforts everyone made to make last year's fund-raising drive so successful," said Gail Hillstrom, the home's administrator. "We all know how important this cause is and that is certainly reflected in the generosity of those that donated. We are now preparing for this year's Memory Walk."

Sarah Stepp, manager of development/special events for Maine Alzheimer's Association made the presentation to staff at the Cony Road home on Wednesday.

Maine Veterans' Homes has five additional homes located in Bangor, Caribou, Machias, Scarborough and So. Paris. Operating as a public, not-for-profit organization,

Maine Veterans' Homes works closely with state and federal agencies, veterans' service organizations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Administration, and local communities to provide quality services to veterans and eligible family members.

The six facilities located throughout the state are recognized nationally for their modern amenities, exceptional programs and full continuum of care, which includes long-term care, residential care, dementia care, and rehabilitation and skilled nursing.

Most importantly, the homes' success can be directly attributed to the unwavering commitment to Maine's veterans and their families by staff and volunteers.
